Mackintosh Burn Limited has played a significant role in building up the city of Kolkata.
Numerous landmark buildings and monuments were constructed by the Company during the British Rule and thereafter.
The historic Company has witnessed the British Rule, Renaissance of Bengal and Freedom movement.
Despite socio-economic, political and cultural changes of the land the Company continues to be a pioneer of the Construction Industry for nearly two centuries.
Most iconic landmarks adorning the cityscape of Kolkata were built by Mackintosh Burn Ltd. Some of the notable structures include Dakshineswar Temple, Nakhoda Mosque, Pareshnath Jain Temple, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Ochterlony Monument, RBI Building, Grand Hotel, National Library, Bidyut Bhawan, Victoria House, Statesman House, Stock Exchange Building, Loreto School, Kolkata Municipal Headquarters, State Central Library, Royal Calcutta Turf Club, Royal Calcutta Golf Club, Bengal Club, Calcutta Swimming Club and many more. The Company had also set up a large number of Industrial Buildings on the banks of the Hooghly during the pre-independence period and received patronage from the Government, Commercial Houses, Rajas & Maharajas. In the post-independence period, its sphere of activities were further diversified to benefit both the urban and rural people of the country.
The Company diversified into construction of Bridges and Viaducts in 1975 and has to its credit Malda Flyover, Teesta Aqueduct, Rallie Bridge (Darjeeling), Approaches of Second Hooghly Bridge, Jamunajore Bridge, Pandaveswar Bridge, Dishergarh Bridge, Karalaghat Bridge to name a few.
The Company also contributed in the construction of widespread Road network of the State which includes NH-34, NH-41, NH-31C, Kona Expressway, EM Byepass Kolkata, Budge Budge Trunk Road etc.
MBL has also credibly forayed into construction of industrial structures like Mullijore Power Station of CESC, Power Plant structure of Southern Generating Station, Bongaigaoan Thermal Power Station(Assam), Raghunathpur Themal Power Plant of DVC (Purulia), Tunnel beneath River Hooghly connecting Botanical Garden & Garden Reach, Fishing Harbour Complexes at Fraserganj, Sankarpur and Namkhana, Modernisation of TISCO (Tata), INDAL (Belur) to name a few.
The Company has spread its activities beyond the boundaries of the state and country. It has constructed numerous structures in Tripura like Polytechnic College, New Secretariat Building, State High Court Building, City Centre, Dhalai District H.Q. , Steel Bridges on River Manu etc. At present, MBL has executed numerous projects in Chattisgarh, Mizoram, Assam & Jharkhand. The Company has also ventured in Bhutan where it has constructed a Bridge over River Ngabi-Rongchu on the Paro-Thimpu Byepass Road and another Bridge on the River Dubi in Nepal.
The Company has been entrusted by the Govt. of West Bengal as an executing agency to monitor projects like any other Engineering Wing of GOWB and has been awarded various Projects of Food & Supply Department, NBDD, Administrative Building at Nimtouri to mention a few. In addition, the Company is strengthening its Design & Drawing Wing and has also bagged some assignments for preparation of DPR.
